Watch the trailer for Madame Net, Sony’s silliest Spider-spin-off but

Madame Net is the newest addition to Sony’s Spider-Man film universe, following on the heels of Venom, the upcoming Kraven the Hunter, and the notorious Morbius catastrophe. The brand new trailer, above, means that the film may-or-may not be sort-of linked to the Spiderverse motion pictures as effectively? However that is about as clear as the rest occurring in right here.

This is the official synopsis:

“In the meantime, in one other universe…” In a change from the standard style, Madame Net tells the standalone origin story of certainly one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who might have clairvoyant skills. Pressured to confront revelations about her previous, she forges a relationship with three younger girls destined for highly effective futures…if they’ll all survive a lethal current.

A number of of my neighbors labored on this film — and I keep in mind, on the time, even they had been confused about what the hell the film was about, or the way it linked to something spider-y. Within the comics, Cassandra Webb is a geriatric clairvoyant — not precisely the form of position you’d sometimes envision for Dakota Johnson. Ezekiel Stane — the creepy not-Spider-Man villain you see within the trailer there — was a grey-haired billionaire who was launched within the first arc of J. Michael Straczynski’s run on Superb Spider-Man. That storyline launched the thought of spider-totems, super-powered representatives of a better order … which in flip, led into the unique Spiderverse storyline, which was way more mystical and high-fantasy centered than the film model.

The film additionally seems to function Julia Carpenter, the second Spider-Lady; Mattie Franklin, the third Spider-Lady who’s additionally the adopted daughter of J. Jonah Jameson; and the similarly-Spider-themed Araña. Curiously absent is Jessica Drew, the unique Spider-Lady, whose character is someway each extra and fewer convoluted than the rest I simply wrote above.

None of that actually issues for the film trailer above, which simply seems to be like an epic shitshow with the proportionate energy of a radioactive spider.
